Juncker: The economic crisis in Europe will not be over until it reaches full employment

Thursday 09th Jun 2016 (Latest News, Europe and Central Asia, Employment)

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker told delegates to the 105th International Labour Conference that in a time of crisis and threats to European solidarity, Europe must be able to accommodate those who seek its help and protection, and remain committed to the fundamental rights of workers under the ILO conventions. Juncker also told delegates that while Europe was in better shape economically today, the crisis will not be over until Europe reaches full employment.

President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker arrives at the Palais des Nations and shakes hands with Michael Møller, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva and Guy Ryder, ILO Director-General

01:13 – 01:33

Guy Ryder, ILO Director-General welcoming remarks (in English):

“The promotion of a high level of employment, the endeavour for the constant improvement of peoples’ living and working conditions, the guarantee of adequate social protection for all, and the fight against social exclusion are some of our common objectives”.

01:33 – 01:53

President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker (in French):

English transation:

„It's time that Europe got a triple A rating for its social record, which we are admittedly still far from achieving.  While it's true that things are going better for Europe from an economic point of view, the crisis will not be over until we return to full employment.“

01:53 – 02:26

President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker (in French):

English transation:

„During all these years of crisis, European solidarity has been put to the test.   And very often, Europe turned in on itself.   But a navel-gazing Europe, a Europe which is looking inwards rather than outwards is not the Europe I dream of.  This Europe is one that is capable of welcoming, in a dignified manner, those who need our help and our protection.“

02:26 – 02:48

President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker (in French):

English transation:

„We will not let standards slide on health, work and other principles that we hold dear, we will safeguard them.  That is why an accord with the United States must contain ambitious commitments on all fundamental rights at work, in line with ILO conventions..“
